Proof Trade Dollars
1880 T$1 PR65 NGC. The proof-only 1880 Trade dollar set a record for the denomination in proof format, with 1,987 pieces struck -- most of which were eagerly acquired by speculators and hyped by well-connected coin dealers. Most of the proofs survive today, although not all are as well-preserved as this attractively toned Gem. Blue, violet, and reddish-gold shades adorn the mirrored fields and lightly frosted, sharply struck motifs. A few delicate lines are tucked away beneath the toning, yet the eye appeal is undisturbed. Census: 71 in 65, 57 finer (3/17).
