Proof Trade Dollars
1882 T$1 PR66 Cameo PCGS. A.M. Smith wrote in the 1882 edition of An Illustrated History of the U.S. Mint "Trade dollars of 1879, 1880, 1881, and 1882 are very rare as only a few hundred of each as Proofs for collectors were struck, and command a premium." Well, yes and no. Mintages were small in absolute terms for each year, but in the context of proof production by the Mint, the quantities ranged from average to large. This gleaming, contrasted and brilliant Premium Gem claims its rarity by the high grade and razor-sharp strike. PCGS reports just three numerically finer examples in Cameo. Population: 8 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 3 finer (3/17).
