Proof Lincoln Cents
1909 1C VDB PR65 Red PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Tom Bender. The 1909 VDB is the rarest of the matte proof Lincoln cents by a fairly significant margin. Although Mint records indicate that the Guide Book mintage of 1,194 pieces is correct, the scarcity of this issue compared to other matte proofs with similarly small production figures suggests that a significant portion of the coins never made it to collectors. The Guide Book estimates that only 400 to 600 pieces were ever distributed from the Mint, which is consistent with the scarcity of the issue today.
PCGS has seen only 30 Red examples in all grades, mostly split between the PR64-PR66 numeric tiers. This CAC-endorsed Gem Red proof displays a full strike and fine matte granularity in the luster, as expected for a genuine matte proof. Tinges of amber and gold are imbedded in the coppery-orange surfaces, and we find no distracting carbon spots. Population: 7 in 65 Red, 9 finer. CAC: 2 in 65, 1 finer (3/17).
