Proof Lincoln Cents
1916 1C PR66 Red PCGS Secure. The short-lived matte proof Lincoln cent series came to an end in 1916. Only 600 proofs were struck and very few were saved in Gem or finer condition. To put together a set, the path of least resistance would be to seek out colorful Red and Brown coins, but the owner of this specimen did not do that. With an unerring eye for quality and originality he only pursued full Red matte proofs for his collection. And from 1916, there are precious few of those that remain. PCGS has only certified five pieces PR66 Red, and none are finer (3/17). This example displays rich cherry-red color on the obverse with a contrasting bright orange-red reverse. Other than the original color and high grade, another aspect that immediately strikes the viewer is the absolutely complete strike definition over each side. Few matte proof Lincoln cents can match the quality and eye appeal of this Registry grade example.
