Proof Seated Half Dimes
1837 H10C No Stars PR64 NGC. Ex: Starr. This is the usual variety for the proof 1837 No Stars half dimes, with a doubled date, the 8 triple punched. This Christian Gobrecht design replaced the Capped Bust design in 1837, and the No Stars design was only struck in Philadelphia in 1837, and in New Orleans in 1838. The original proof mintage is unknown, but has often been estimated at 20 pieces. With no official mintage records, the best that can be done today is an estimate based on the number of surviving specimens, and typically the estimate is twice the current population. The attractive steel-gray proof surfaces exhibit delicate blue and rose toning on each side.
Ex: B. Max Mehl (3/1938), lot 496; Floyd Starr (Stack's, 10/1992), lot 322.
