Bust Dimes
1820 10C JR-4, R.5, MS65 NGC. CAC. Judging the relative sizes of the 0 compared to the 2 in the date for the dimes of 1820 causes a great deal of confusion. The authors of Early United States Dimes 1796-1837 (the JR dime book) observe that only varieties JR-2 and JR-3 have Small 0 date logotypes, and only varieties JR-8, 9, and 13 have Large 0 logotypes. The authors of the Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide report that JR-2 and 3 are the Small 0 varieties, JR-7 is a Medium 0, and the remainder are Large 0 varieties. However, NGC correctly attributes this example as a JR-4 with a Small 0 in the date. PCGS also calls the JR-4 a Small 0 variety. On this example, the 2 and the 0 are each 1.8 mm. high.
What is not confusing is the rarity of this variety, especially in high grades. The variety was rated R.5 in the JR dime book that was published in 1984, and remains R.5 or possibly High R.4 today. High grade examples are rarely encountered, and even an XF or AU example would be a prize for the Capped Bust dime specialist. The famous Allen Lovejoy collection, for example, had a VF example that was previously from the Norweb Collection. The best example illustrated at PCGS Coin Facts grades XF45.
The present example is far finer than any 1820 JR-4 dime we have previously offered, and it is likely the finest known of the die marriage. Both sides feature sharp design details and satiny silver luster with attractive blue and iridescent toning at the upper obverse, and delicate peripheral toning on the reverse. This is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced Capped Bust variety collector.
