Twenty Cent Pieces
1875-CC 20C MS67 ★ NGC. BF-4, R.2. Ex: Battle Born Collection. The short-lived twenty cent denomination was either a misjudgment by Mint and political officials or an outright boondoggle -- doomed from the start -- yet in the first year of issue (1875) its production was a point of pride for the Carson City Mint. Rusty Goe offers the following interesting discussion in his book, The Mint on Carson Street:
"Production of 20-cent pieces at the Carson City Mint began on the first of June in 1875. Employees at this mint facility had made a concerted effort to beat San Francisco to the finish line in the race to be the first mint west of Philadelphia to strike the new coin. The race resulted in a virtual dead heat, but Carson City claimed the victory. Senator [John Percival] Jones was presented with the first 1875-CC 20-cent piece minted. Locals were proud to celebrate the issuance of a coin that one of their own political leaders was credited with introducing."
This pedigreed Superb Gem survivor is indeed a coin to celebrate. Carefully preserved since mintage, the surfaces are stunning with immense luster shining through vibrant patina, pale green at the margins that fades through blue and violet before reaching the rich reddish-orange centers. The fields are semiprooflike -- an unusual characteristic for the issue, which is usually quite frosted -- with raised die polish lines suggesting newly prepared dies. Marks are limited to a small contact below the cap and two small nicks between stars 5 and 6. The date is positioned far to the right, paired with the Wide CC reverse, to confirm the BF-4 variety. Twenty cent pieces are generally poorly struck, with weakness at Liberty's head and the surrounding stars, but the present coin is sharp except at the upper obverse. The shield and eagle are better-struck than usual, with only nominal weakness at the talons.
Fantastically appealing and the single-finest example in the combined certified population, this is a coin with both the provenance and high numeric grade that are sure to make even the most advanced collector take notice. Census: 1 in 67★, 0 finer (3/17).
