Seated Quarters
1847-O 25C MS63 NGC. Despite a generous mintage of 368,000 New Orleans quarter dollars in 1847, Mint State pieces are elusive. In fact, PCGS and NGC have only certified 11 Mint State examples, and only one of those (graded MS64) is finer than the present piece (3/17). Ever since our landmark offerings of the Eugene Gardner Collection in 2014 and 2015, collectors and dealers will compare any example to those contained in that collection, the finest Liberty Seated collection ever formed. In the case of the 1847-O, Mr. Gardner acquired a lovely PCGS MS63 example, and we have only offered one other similarly graded piece since 1993. In fact, the present example that has been off the market for several decades is quite similar to the Gardner specimen with brilliant orange toning and spectacular light blue peripheries. Census: 3 in 63, 0 finer (3/17).
