Seated Quarters
1856-S 25C MS63 PCGS. Briggs-Unlisted. The tail die is Briggs' Reverse C, the head die shows the date further left than is seen on the usual obverse. As a date, the 1856-S Seated quarter is a scarce issue in the upper circulated grades and decidedly rare in Mint State. Our Permanent Auction Archives list a total of 12 previous appearances in Uncirculated condition. PCGS reports 10 Mint State coins, including 4 in MS63 with an MS64 and an MS65 finer; NGC reports two Uncirculated pieces, graded MS61 and MS62, respectively (3/17).
This example is fully struck with satiny luster and a blush of green-tinted champagne toning. Light surface grazes appear on each side, although none are singularly significant. A finer example may simply not be obtainable for many years.
