Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-107, T-5, R.6, XF45 NGC. The reverse die is the same as that on the plentiful O-101 die marriage, but here in an earlier die state with a faint crack through the F in OF. In Early United States Half Dollars, Volume 1, 1794-1807, Steve Tompkins writes that the O-107 is unknown above VF. The present example is far finer than any of the top ten examples illustrated in Tompkins' reference. The early half dollar website, maibockaddict.com, records that a VF20 NGC piece is the finest auctioned over the last 10 years. Steve Herrman also lists VF20 as the finest to appear for public sale in the last several years. Both sides have natural grayish-brown surfaces with excellent design definition for the grade. Minor adjustment marks are noted at the central obverse. The reverse exhibits traces of luster. We believe that this example is the finest O-107 half dollar surviving today.
