Bust Half Dollars
1811/10 50C O-101, R.1, MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Resplendent azure-blue and bronze-gold toning combine with smooth, mark-free surfaces for the Choice appeal of this "Punctuated Date" half dollar. Liberty's portrait is dramatically strike-doubled at the nose, lips, chin, and neck. The strike is for the most part razor-sharp, although the left-side stars are without the central definition -- a characteristic of the O-101 die pair that helps distinguish it from the similar O-102, which has sharp left-hand stars. Cartwheel mint luster beams brightly across both sides.
Old-time collectors still call this the "18 dot 11" variety, since the overdate lacks all but a few tiny remnants. A sharp spike in the cap is an equally noticeable feature of the variety. CAC-endorsed, this piece ranks near the top of the Condition Census for the O-101 based on Steve Herrman's current listing and the Parsley reference. Population (both 1811/10 varieties): 9 in 64 (2 in 64+), 1 finer. CAC: 4 in 64, 0 finer (3/17).
