Bust Half Dollars
1819 50C O-114, R.3, MS65+ PCGS. This high-end Gem is not only the finest of the variety -- identified by a die line on the eagle's neck feathers -- it ranks among the finest 1819 half dollars extant. The only finer non-overdate 1819 half known is the Pogue O-107 example in MS66. The Pogue collection also included two 1819/8 pieces in Premium Gem condition. This important offering should stimulate intense competition when it crosses the block. Softly frosted mint luster shines through deep tones of gold, violet, and blue. This high-end Gem is fully struck. Four small ticks appear above the eagle's left wing and head. For the variety, it ranks as the numerically finest-known according to the Steve Herrman listing and it is tied for finest based on the Donald Parsley reference. By way of the Plus designation, it is the finest on the certified population charts. Population (all Normal Date varieties included): 10 in 65 (2 in 65+), 2 finer (11/16).
