Seated Half Dollars
1865 50C Repunched Date, WB-104, MS66 PCGS. CAC. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert list the Normal Date WB-101 variety along with three other major varieties, including the WB-104 that has the 8 recut to the north, the recutting especially visible inside the lower loop of that digit. The present specimen is an amazing example of WB-104. This piece appears to be an early die state that lacks the heavy obverse clash marks described in the WB reference. Faint clash marks and minor die cracks are evident on the reverse.
Housed in an old green-label PCGS holder, both sides of this Premium Gem show pastel gray-gold at the centers, with peripheral blue and iridescent toning. Frosty luster and sharp design motifs create excellent eye appeal.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 3242.
