Walking Liberty Half Dollars
1918-S 50C MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1918-S is among the most challenging of the early Walkers in high grade. In Gem condition, examples are rarely offered at auction, and CAC-approved coins in this grade are extremely rare. We have previously handled only three CAC-endorsed Gems, which realized $16,450-$18,800 in 2013 and 2015. This solidly graded example displays brighter luster than the aforementioned coins and is brilliant. The strike is above average for the issue, although Liberty's head is not fully defined. A few light grazes are in keeping with the grade. Only one numerically finer example is known to have sold at auction -- an MS66 PCGS coin that realized approximately $64,000 in our August 2016 ANA Signature sale. Population: 33 in 65 (2 in 65+), 3 finer. CAC: 7 in 65, 2 finer (3/17).
