Early Dollars
1796 $1 Small Date, Small Letters, B-1, BB-66, R.4, AU53 PCGS. John Whitney began forming his amazing collection of 1796 coinage about 1960, and over the next 38 years, he acquired 67 of the 70 known varieties at the time. Those he lacked were the 1796 NC-6 cent (just two known), the 1796 B-3 silver dollar (just two confirmed), and the 1796 BD-1 quarter eagle (only six known). Another variety, the 1796 JR-7 dime, was yet undiscovered at the time Whitney sold his collection in May 1999.
This lovely dollar exhibits warm hues of gold, blue, and lilac. The toning is accented by areas of a darker blue and gray toning on the highpoints and over the devices. The surfaces are above average for the grade and the rims appear to be free from any defects.
