Early Dollars
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 13 Stars, B-1, BB-82, R.3, AU53 NGC. Bowers Die State III+. The reverse die of the 13 Stars Small Eagle dollar was used to strike both the 1797 BB-73 dollars and the 1798 BB-82. Based on the reverse die states, the most likely scenario is that some (or all) of the BB-73 coins were actually struck in 1798, interrupted by the BB-82 mintage, which displays varying later stages of the reverse die. Some of the 1798 Mint deliveries must have included 1797-dated coins (BB-73), and the 1798 Small Eagle mintage is likely overstated. The present coin shows an advanced state of the reverse, with die clashing within the wreath (not mentioned by Bowers) and a full complement of die breaks that correspond to the those visible at the terminal stage of the final 1797 coins struck.
Light golden-gray toning covers both sides of this About Uncirculated example. A glass reveals some tiny field chatter and minor marks, plus a minor rim nick at 4 o'clock on the reverse. The strike is a bit soft as always seen on the issue, especially at the right (facing) side of the eagle and on a few of the obverse star centers. Soft silver luster glows beneath the pleasing patina. Census (13 Stars variety): 1 in 53, 6 finer (3/17).
