Early Dollars
1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-9, BB-166, R.1, MS62 NGC. Bowers Die State V. The die break after the second S in STATES is diagnostic of this, the most frequently encountered die pair for the 1799 Draped Bust dollar. A die crack through star 10 to Liberty's chin, and others between stars 11 and 12 confirm the late state of the dies. Glints of reddish patina provide accents of color near the legends, leaving the rest of each side virtually untoned. The relief elements exhibit a pinpoint impression with only the eagle's breast feathers displaying moderate incompleteness. This is a brightly lustrous early dollar and an ideal 18th century type coin. Census (all varieties): 13 in 62, 38 finer (1/17).
