Seated Dollars
1872-S $1 MS62 PCGS. OC-1, Low R.3. From a tiny business strike mintage of 9,000 coins, the 1872-S Seated dollar is reasonably available in circulated grades. According to A Buyer's Guide to Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States (3rd Edition, 2006): "The 1872-S is the only readily collectible San Francisco Mint Liberty Seated silver dollar of the No Motto type."
In Uncirculated condition, however, this issue is a great rarity and currently just 24 examples have been rated in all Mint State grades by NGC and PCGS combined. The current example is boldly detailed, showing a bit of the usual weakness on Liberty's head, and on the lower reverse some softness is noted on the left (facing) talons and the branch. Lovely golden-tan coloration and shimmering mint luster ensure the fine eye appeal of the piece. A few scattered abrasions limit the grade. Population: 5 in 62, 6 finer (3/17).
Ex: Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2014), lot 3815.
