Proof Trade Dollars
1881 T$1 PR66 ★ Cameo NGC. This brilliant and contrasted proof dazzles the eye with untoned surfaces and strong, white-on-black contrast. It carries NGC's Star designation to confirm the outstanding technical quality and visual appeal. Silver-mirrored fields are just that -- silver -- without any trace of milky toning and only a few nearly imperceptible interruptions to the glassy-smooth surfaces. The central motifs are snow-white and fully struck.
The mintage of 960 pieces comprised the entire production of 1881 Trade dollars. All were proofs. The strike is particularly sharp for the issue, which in some cases received poor workmanship at the Mint. Liberty's head and the flanking stars are fully struck, which is not always the case for the 1881. Aside from a few well-heeled dealers who may have purchased multiple examples, most coins went into the hands of collectors, where they received varying degrees of preservation. The present Premium Gem example was, quite obviously, carefully preserved from the day of its mintage. Census: 19 in 66 Cameo (3 in 66★), 15 finer (3/17).
