Morgan Dollars
1879 $1 MS67 NGC. There is a reason we have only offered four Superb Gem 1879 Morgan dollars in nearly 20 years of public auctions. This issue simply does not exist MS67 level to any extent, with both PCGS and NGC reporting identical populations of just five coins in MS67 and no finer examples (3/17). The last example we had the privilege of selling was in 2009. It is unknown how many resubmissions are reflected in the population data.
This is an extremely vibrant and exceptionally well-preserved example for the issue. Brilliant-white and entirely untoned, the frosted surfaces emit beacons of cartwheel luster. Marks are limited to a few microscopic ticks and inconsequential grazes, while the strike is sharp for an 1879, with just brief blending above the ear. A capstone for any fine Registry Set or advanced Morgan dollar collection.
