Morgan Dollars
1880-CC $1 Reverse of 1879, 8/7 Dash, VAM-3A, MS67 PCGS. CAC. A late die state variant of VAM-3, showing heavy clash marks. There is a die break at the top of the left wreath branch, and there is pitting around the mintmark. One of many interesting die varieties of the 1880-CC dollar. This issue was coined primarily during the second half of 1880, with a mintage of 495,000 coins. Despite the limited production, the date as a whole is available in most grades since more than 130,000 coins were preserved in government vaults and distributed through the GSA sales of the early 1970s. The exceptions are coins designated as Superb Gems -- such pieces are rare, and almost never seen with a CAC green sticker. This PCGS example showcases radiant, frosty mint luster and brilliant surfaces. The strike is a trifle weak on the hair above Liberty's ear, although we find no other points of imperfection for the grade. Population: 36 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer. CAC: 7 in 67, 0 finer (3/17).
