Morgan Dollars
1883 $1 MS68 NGC. Virtually unmarked and sharply struck, this brilliant and frosty-white 1883 is remarkably smooth and attractive. Nearly 12.3 million pieces were struck, most of which were stored in 57-pound bags piled high in Treasury vaults until released (still in bags) during the 1950s and 1960s. The present piece was either unbelievably fortunate to survive unscathed or, more likely, was carefully preserved from the time it was struck.
The 1883 issue is readily available up to and including the Premium Gem grade. The "average" Mint State coin grades between MS63 and MS65. Even MS67 coins are scarce, but obtainable, for a price. Finer coins are very rare. This lustrous MS68 representative is one of ten such coins reported by the combined population data from PCGS and NGC, with no coins numerically finer (3/17).
