Morgan Dollars
1887 $1 MS68 NGC. While the 1887 is an easily obtained Philadelphia issue in all but the finest grades, the strike and surface quality vary greatly from coin to coin. This incredible Superb Gem excels in both regards, with a strong strike and vibrant eye appeal. Smooth, semireflective fields surround the frosted central motifs. Liberty's cheek and neck are equally smooth and mark-free. Cartwheel luster beams from both sides of the coin.
More than 20 million pieces were struck in 1887, a figure not exceeded in the Morgan dollar series until 1921. The current certified population for 1887 dollars exceeds 340,000 coins, yet no example surpasses the present coin in numerical grade. Three other MS68 pieces are known (one at PCGS, the other two at NGC, one with the Star designation). Census: 3 in 68 (1 in 68★), 0 finer (3/17).
