Morgan Dollars
1888 $1 MS68 NGC. This piece is sharply struck and highly lustrous with frosty silver surfaces that are accented by a trace of light gold toning along the obverse and reverse borders. While the mintage of 1888 Morgan dollars was nearly equal to that of 1887, it appears that a smaller number were stored in the Treasury over the years, and today the total population for this date is only one-quarter that of 1887. Even still, nearly 50,000 have been certified by NGC; however, just this one coin has received the MS68 grade by that grading company. As PCGS has never certified an example at this grade level, the present piece qualifies as the single finest example certified by either NGC or PCGS, a unique coin in such fine quality (3/17), a status unchanged since we last handled this example a decade ago.
