Morgan Dollars
1889 $1 MS67 PCGS. The 1889 Morgan is plentiful in most Uncirculated grades, although its availability plummets dramatically at the Superb Gem level. The Condition Census is composed of seven MS67s (four at PCGS and three at NGC), and a single MS68 at PCGS (3/17). No Prooflike or Deep Mirror Prooflike coins are known this fine.
This beautifully preserved Superb Gem is only the fifth coin in this grade that we have handled. The last was an NGC piece in our April 2013 Central States Signature sale, lot 4841, which realized $14,100. The last PCGS coin that we handled in this grade was in lot 5658 of our January 2011 FUN Signature sale, which realized $18,400. It may be years again before another Superb Gem 1889 silver dollar appears at auction. This piece displays virtually flawless, softly frosted surfaces with a hint of light golden toning. The strike is bold, and eye appeal is outstanding.
