Morgan Dollars
1891-S $1 MS67 PCGS. It was 2009 when we last offered a Superb Gem 1891-S silver dollar, which was the Arno Collection coin (formerly in the Norweb Collection). No 1891-S of similar quality has appeared in a Heritage Signature auction until the present coin. Gleaming silver surfaces resist a faint hint of pale, golden-gray toning that serves to confirm the originality of this essentially brilliant example.
Bagmarks are the chief culprit haunting the issue, yet this vibrantly lustrous coin shows none. The strike is uniformly sharp but not quite full above the ear, as often seen on San Francisco dollars of the day. The eye appeal is particularly impressive, unimpeded by any significant marks or grazes on either side. Neither PCGS nor NGC report any 1891-S with a numerically finer grade. Population: 8 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer (3/17).
