Morgan Dollars
1895-S $1 MS65 PCGS. The 1895-S Morgan dollar enjoys strong demand from date collectors, those collectors who seek a single example from each year without regard to the mintmark. The Philadelphia Mint produced only proofs, despite a mintage figure that suggests 12,000 circulation strikes were coined. Nobody has seen one. The New Orleans Mint produced 450,000 silver dollars in 1895, and nearly all of those coins entered circulation. Mint State examples are great rarities in the series. And in San Francisco, 400,000 Morgan dollars were coined in 1895, and a large number of those coins remained in treasury vaults. Most of those coins were released to circulation in the early 20th century. Today, Mint State examples are the most plentiful for the year, but they are still elusive in comparison to the many common date Morgan dollars. This example is fully brilliant and untoned, with a sharp strike and reflective silver surfaces. Population: 42 in 65 (3 in 65+), 3 finer (3/17).
