Morgan Dollars
1903-S $1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The scarcity of the 1903-S in high grade is not so much due to its moderately low mintage (slightly more than 1.2 million coins), but the fact that many coins were released into circulation over a long period of time, with few pieces spared for numismatic purposes. According to Dave Bowers, no significant quantities of the date in Mint State turned up after the 1950s, when many other Morgan dollar issues benefited from large Treasury releases.
In Gem condition, the 1903-S is genuinely scarce, and in comparison to collector demand, it is rare. Fewer than 60 finer pieces are reported by the grading services, including possible resubmissions. This CAC-approved coin displays brilliant, vibrant luster and a clean cheek. The strike is above average, and eye appeal is outstanding. CAC: 29 in 65, 10 finer (3/17).
