Proof Morgan Dollars
1878 8TF $1 Spiked Eye, VAM-14.8, PR67 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg/Jack Lee. This is among the estimated 500 proofs struck featuring the 8 Tailfeathers reverse, the very first variant in the Morgan dollar series. In addition to its status as one of the first Morgan dollar specimens produced, it also boasts an impeccable pedigree that can be traced back to some of the finest collections ever assembled. Each side displays a rich layer of rose and gold patina over the centers, melding with deep cobalt-blue tones near the edges. The eye appeal and preservation are simply outstanding, and we second the opinion of the Eliasberg cataloger when he noted: "A nicer proof Morgan dollar of any date cannot be imagined." Census: 3 in 67, 0 finer (3/17).
Ex: C.T. Whitman Collection (Chapman Brothers, 8/1893), lot 442, which realized $1.90; J.M Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 2251; Jack Lee Collection; Unknown intermediaries.
