Proof Morgan Dollars
1883 $1 PR68 Cameo NGC. Ex: Chappell Collection. The 1883 proof Morgan dollar is remarkably elusive in both high grade as well as Cameo quality. The availability is disproportionately low considering an impressive proof mintage of 1,039 coins was accomplished. A trio of Premium Gems at PCGS are the only Deep/Ultra Cameos known, and the finest Cameos at that service are a pair of PR67s. NGC lists three PR68 Cameos as the finest known (3/17). One of them is offered here. The preservation is virtually flawless, as the grade suggests, and the sharp design elements are beautifully highlighted by stark white-on-black contrast that is unhindered by any perceptible toning. The cameo quality borders on Ultra Cameo depth. Even as a Cameo, this coin is truly memorable in the context of proof 1883 Morgan dollars.
