1898 $1 PR68+ ★ Ultra Cameo NGC. Ex: Chappell Collection. This remarkable Ultra Cameo is dramatically contrasted from any angle, but when viewed head-on, the white-on-black separation unimprovable. The coin is brilliant other than a hint of gold around the rims. Proof 1898 dollars with this much contrast are scarce in all grades, but Superb Gems are rare, and only a few pieces have achieved the PR68 level within the Ultra/Deep Cameo category. NGC reports three PR68 Ultra Cameos as the finest at that service -- two are Star-designated, and the third is the Star and Plus-designated coin offered here. PCGS reports a single PR68 Deep Cameo that is comparable (3/17).
