Proof Morgan Dollars
1903 $1 PR68 NGC. The first "all-brilliant" proof silver dollars appeared in 1902, a look that carried over to subsequent years. The 1903 proofs took the new look to an extreme, with dazzling silver brilliance throughout both sides, and nearly zero field/device contrast. The present Superb Gem is the epitome of the Mint's intended result. The fields flash like polished half-moon hubcaps, and the portrait rides along like a gleaming hood ornament.
The surfaces are essentially flawless and the strike is fabulously sharp. Pale-gold toning on the rims provides welcome relief for the eyes. Here is an unimprovable example of the Mint's most distinctive format change for proofs until the introduction of matte proofs at the end of the decade. Census: 6 in 68 (1 in 68), 0 finer (3/17).
From The Siegel Collection.
