Early Proof Sets
Ten-Piece 1878 Proof Set, PR63 to PR66 NGC. The proof set contains the Trade dollar as well as both the 8TF and 7TF varieties of the 1878 Morgan dollar. All ten coins are individually housed in matching NGC holders from the 1997-2000 period. With the exception of the dime's, the certification numbers are consecutive (1 through 9). The set includes:
Cent PR66 Red and Brown. This Premium Gem is among the finest Red and Brown 1878 proof cents at NGC. The strike is full, and the reflective coppery-orange fields show attractive accents of lavender and olive-green.
Three Cent Nickel PR66 Cameo. A proof-only issue with a mintage of 2,350 coins. This Premium Gem Cameo is among the most well-preserved coins in this set. The strike is full, and each side shows delicate iridescent toning.
Shield Nickel PR65. One of the two proof-only dates in the series. This Gem example is more satiny than reflective, as is characteristic of the issue. The strike is bold, and each side has a dusting of light champagne toning.
Dime PR66. Fortin-101, R.3. The only proof die pair. This Premium Gem shows original multicolor toning with the deeper hues clustered near the borders. The strike is sharp, and the surfaces are unblemished. The obverse has a hint of contrast emerging from beneath the patina.
Twenty Cent PR63. BF-1, R.3. The final issue in the short-lived twenty cent series, produced only in proof format. This Select example displays a full strike and appreciable contrast on each side. Warm amber-gold toning masks light hairlines in the fields that limit the grade.
Quarter PR64. Briggs 4-D. Type Two Reverse. Beautifully preserved and originally toned with golden interiors that cede to rich violet and blue borders. The obverse is cameo-contrasted, the reverse less so.
Half Dollar PR64 Cameo. WB-101. Type Two Reverse. Closed Bud. Cameo contrast on the silver interiors is accentuated by sun-gold border toning. This Choice proof is sharp on the obverse and only slightly weak on the reverse on the eagle's left (facing) talons.
Trade Dollar PR64. A fully struck coin with modest field-device contrast and a halo of sun-orange rim toning. Faint hairlines in the fields determine the grade but do not appear to the naked eye.
Morgan Dollar, 8TF, PR64. VAM-14.8, Spiked Eye. This Choice proof is slightly soft on the eagle's breast feathers but sharp on the obverse. Subtle field-motif contrast on each side is accentuated by delicate golden toning. A few spots of bluish toning appear around the RIB in PLURIBUS.
Morgan Dollar, 7TF, Reverse of 1878, PR64. Soft amber-gold toning warms the modestly contrasted surfaces of this Choice proof, masking any minor hairlines that limit the grade. The strike is a trifle soft on the eagle's leg feathers but bold on the obverse.
