Gold Dollars
1852-C G$1 MS65 NGC. Variety 2. The usual variety for the date with the base of the 1 repunched. Actually, the upright of the digit extends below the base. The Charlotte Mint coined 9,434 gold dollars in 1852, and survivors are seen more frequently than the mintage suggests. However, Gem or finer examples are extremely rare. The finest known is an MS66 NGC example, and this piece is tied with a small number of others for second finest. Both sides are fully lustrous and sharply defined with brilliant green-gold surfaces are delicate rose toning. Census: 5 in 65, 1 finer (3/17).
