Liberty Quarter Eagles
1855-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. The only known die pair. The Charlotte Mint struck 3,677 quarter eagles in 1855, and perhaps 3% of those pieces survive today. Although the population figures suggest a higher total, Doug Winter recorded six Mint State examples of this issue. The present piece appears to be different from any of those that Winter enumerates, and should be added to his roster. The strike is typical with weakness at the hair curls below the coronet, and noticeably so on the eagle's left (facing) leg. The light yellow surfaces exhibit satin luster with wisps of pale orange toning. This is a lovely example for an advanced collection. Census: 5 in 62, 4 finer (3/17).
