Liberty Quarter Eagles
1866 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. This issue's mintage of 3,080 pieces is part of a string of four-figure production for Philadelphia quarter eagles that runs from 1864 (only proofs were struck in 1863) to 1872. The 1866 was also little-saved, and as a result, Mint State survivors are particularly elusive. In fact, fewer than 75 examples of the date are believed to survive in all grades combined. This captivating piece, well struck with deep orange-gold and sun-yellow surfaces overall, shows occasional wispy abrasions in the fields that contribute to the grade. Still, it is an attractive and important coin. There is no evidence of cleaning. Census: 1 in 61, 4 finer (3/17).
