1900 $2 1/2 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. The 1900 proof Liberty quarter eagle is an excellent type coin, easily meshing with type sets of both the 19th century and the 1900s. It is also fairly plentiful in the context of proof gold, although its availability falls off sharply in the Deep Cameo category. PCGS reports 35 Deep Cameo-worthy submissions, with a median grade of PR66. Examples certified finer than this level are rarely offered.
The present coin is every bit a Premium Gem, and the dramatically contrasted yellow-gold devices seem to pop out of the liquidlike mirroring of the fields. Even with a loupe it is difficult to discern what kept this coin from a finer grade ... such is the immense visual quality. A lovely coin for the collector who has a weak spot for beautiful proof gold. Population: 13 in 66 (3 in 66+) Deep Cameo, 12 finer (3/17).
