Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1885 $3 MS65 Prooflike NGC. From 1871 to the end of the series in 1889, three dollar gold pieces were struck only at the Philadelphia Mint. In 1885 that facility coined 801 circulation strikes and 109 proofs for a total coinage of 1,000 pieces. Due to the low overall production, many of the circulation strike coins have prooflike surfaces as does this boldly defined Gem. Scattered grade-consistent marks are evident on both sides with outstanding eye appeal. The fields of this brilliant orange-gold example are fully mirrored around cameo-like devices. Census: 5 in 65 (1 in 65★) Prooflike, 0 finer (3/17).
