Early Half Eagles
1795 $5 Small Eagle, S Over D, BD-6, R.5, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. A bright, richly colored sun-gold example of the BD-6 Wide Date, S Over D variety, with the 1 in the date distant from the curl. Attractive, semiprooflike surfaces of this impressive example show only a few isolated, minor marks with plentiful mint luster beaming across the smooth and glossy surfaces. We note a peppering of tiny marks around the 7 in the date, possibly of Mint origin, along with numerous die cutter's spurs that radiate from the edges on both sides. A short abrasion beneath the branch near the final A in AMERICA does not distract, yet serves as a useful pedigree marker.
The strike retains sharp definition despite the assigned About Uncirculated grade. A trace of wear on the eagle's breast feathers and on the forward leg exists, yet the plumage is remarkably crisp for the Small Eagle type. Always in demand as the first United States gold coin, the 1795 Small Eagle fives are especially desirable with the S Over D engraver's blunder at the second S of STATES. One other variety (BD-5) shares the blunder, but it is rare and seldom available. This more-accessible BD-6 representative is housed in a PCGS prior generation green label holder. It would be no surprise to see it move up a notch or two in grade from its present AU50 designation.
