Early Half Eagles
1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-12, High R.6, XF40 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. A mispunched E, originally entered much too close to B in LIBERTY, was partially effaced and then reentered correctly, leaving remnants to earn the "apostrophe" moniker. The die engraver's error is clearly visible even on this moderately circulated example, as is broad repunching on the nearby I. The reverse die carried over to the following year, paired with the 1796/5 obverse. Some researchers believe the BD-12 half eagles were actually struck in 1796 -- a likely scenario, given the Mint's penchant for ignoring the date on a die if it was still serviceable, and the few survivors of the 1796/5 compared to the reported mintage.
Housed in a previous generation blue label holder with CAC endorsement, this is an attractive representative of the rare BD-12 die marriage. Smooth wear on the high points complements the minimally marked fields. Appealing apricot-gold coloration displays orange accents at the borders and around the central motifs. A few light adjustment marks run horizontally across the eagle's breast, but they are few and of little concern, diminished by wear. The protected elements retain their sharpness and hints of reddish-gold mint luster. Fewer than 15 representatives are thought to exist of the variety.
