Early Half Eagles
1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, MS61 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d, cracked reverse. A thin, spindly die crack down from the reverse dentils between the final S in STATES and the O in OF is not noted in the Bass-Dannreuther reference. BD-2 is a collectible variety, although, as with any early half eagle die marriage, attractive Mint State examples are scarce. This CAC-approved MS61 coin displays a bold, even strike that shows only slight incompleteness on the high point of the eagle's neck. The border dentils are complete, and the fields display semiprooflike reflectivity. Rich straw-gold patina yields deeper coppery-orange hues around the margins, attesting to the originality of the surfaces. Census (all varieties included): 38 in 61 (1 in 61+), 52 finer. CAC: 7 in 61, 19 finer (1/17).
From The Hutchinson Collection, Part II.
