Early Half Eagles
1804 $5 Small Over Large 8, BD-7, R.4, AU50 ANACS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, terminal reverse. This is the latest die state for the final 1804 half eagle die variety. BD-7 is the most frequently seen 1804 die marriage, but none of the varieties of this date are individually common; BD-7 has an estimated population of fewer than 150 coins, of which few pieces have original coloration and strong eye appeal. The present coin displays areas of semiprooflike reflectivity in the fields with remarkably sharp design elements that show no loss of detail from wear. Only light friction in the open areas of the fields denotes the AU50 grade on the old white, small size ANACS holder. Rich orange-gold surfaces yield appealing violet and lavender overtones, and the surfaces are smooth. A small patch of mint-made adjustment marks is seen near stars 1 and 2 on the obverse.
