Early Half Eagles
1805 $5 BD-1, High R.3, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, uncracked dies. BD-1 is the first and most plentiful 1805 half eagle die marriage, ideal for the collector seeking a single date representative in high grade. This Mint State example displays satiny yellow-gold mint luster with only minimal evidence of surface contact in the open areas of the fields. The strike is bold and even, and there are no major abrasions. This piece is about average in terms of numeric grade for a Mint State 1805 half eagle, although its eye appeal surpasses expectations. Finer examples are scarcely seen at auction.
