Early Half Eagles
1806 $5 Knob 6, 7x6 Stars, BD-6, R.2 -- Obverse Graffiti -- NGC Details. XF. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e, a usually seen advanced die state. The 1806 Capped Bust Right half eagle claims a mintage of 64,093 pieces, with six die varieties known for the date. The BD-6 is the only variety to feature a Knob 6 in the date, and it has a large surviving population of 600-900 examples in all grades.
This is an evenly, well-struck Draped Bust type coin with excellent central detail for the XF grade level. Slight strike weakness is seen on the eagle's left (facing) wing near the shield. Some luster remains in the protected regions amid medium green-gold patina, and several old pinscratches in the right obverse field are all that prevent a numeric designation.
