Early Half Eagles
1807 $5 Bust Right, BD-5, High R.6, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, terminal. The Bass-Dannreuther reference calls BD-5 "by far ... the toughest variety of this date." Only 18 or 22 examples are extant in all grades, and the present coin represents the latest known die state. Original yellow-gold patina shows hints of luster in the fields, while each side exhibits the expected array of minor marks. The strike is weak on the back of Liberty's hair curls and cap, as well as on the eagle's neck and left (facing) wing, but the definition is far better than is seen on some other examples of this variety. Given the rarity of the BD-5 die marriage, this piece represents an important opportunity for the early half eagle specialist.
