Early Half Eagles
1811 $5 Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/d. Tall 5. A slightly scarcer variety defined by the size of 5 in the denomination, the Tall 5 is considerably more elusive in higher grades than its Small 5 (BD-2) counterpart. According to current population data at PCGS and NGC, total grading events at the AU55 level and finer show the Small 5 half eagles outnumber the Tall 5 coins by a margin of nearly two to one (2/17).
The present About Uncirculated Tall 5 example is quite Choice with most of the mint luster remaining. The greenish-gold fields and devices display orange accents and minimally abraded surfaces, while the strike is exceptionally strong in almost all areas. We note a few shallow marks near the second 1 of the date and an area of minor weakness on the scroll above I of PLURIBUS. The eye appeal is outstanding. PCGS population: 10 in 55, 49 finer (2/17).
