Early Half Eagles
1812 $5 BD-2, High R.4, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. According to Mint records, 58,087 Capped Bust Left half eagles were struck in 1812, with two die varieties known for the date. BD-2 is the scarcer of the two 1812 half eagle varieties, with fewer than 100 coins believed extant in all grades. The obverse is the same die from BD-1, but the reverse shows the 5D of the denomination more closely spaced. This was the only use of both dies. This example is boldly and evenly struck with partially lustrous fields and only a brush of wear over the high points of the devices. Housed in a green label holder.
