Early Half Eagles
1814/3 $5 BD-1, High R.4, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. A faint die crack along the bases of 1 and 4 in the date approaches star 13. Remnants of the underdigit 3 remain at the top and bottom of the primary 4. The 1814/3 is dually popular as the sole variety of the 1814 date and as the final collectible overdate of the Capped Head Left series (the 1825/4 and 1828/7 overdates are supreme rarities, out of reach to even advanced collectors).
Brassy-gold and semireflective fields join sharply struck devices on this Choice About Uncirculated BD-1 example, which is sharply struck and only lightly abraded despite the reflective surfaces. Attractive orange accents outline the raised elements to emphasize the antique gold patina. Historically, about 100 examples are thought to survive, and the number of grading events supports that number. The current piece offers an attractive alternative to a full Mint State coin. Census: 4 in 55, 53 finer (1/17).
