Liberty Half Eagles
1857-D $5 MS62 PCGS. Variety 42-HH. "The 1857-D half eagle is undervalued and it is actually among the scarcest of the late date half eagles from this mint": Thus begins Doug Winter's commentary on this issue in Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, third edition. However, the date's rarity is abundantly clear in Mint State. PCGS and NGC combined list 24 Uncirculated coins, although there is likely duplication in this figure. Winter's estimate is only seven or eight Mint State pieces. PCGS has seen a single coin finer than the present example. This piece displays satiny yellow-gold mint luster with light abrasions for the grade. The stars are sharp, but the usual weakness occurs on the hair curls around Liberty's face and on the eagle's neck and the fletchings. Quite appealing for a Dahlonega half eagle. Population: 5 in 62, 1 finer (3/17).
