Liberty Half Eagles
1870 $5 MS61 NGC. The 1870 Liberty half eagle is an underrated issue from a low-mintage of just 4,000 pieces. Contemporary collectors tended to eschew the circulation-strike coins from the Philadelphia Mint in favor of the yearly proof offerings. As a result, the 1870 Liberty five has a low-survival rate to go with its meager production total. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population at fewer than 100 examples in all grades. Most specimens seen today are in middle circulated grades, and Mint State pieces are very rare. This MS61 NGC specimen is tied with two coins at PCGS for finest-certified honors.
The present coin offers well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of the usual softness on the arrow fletchings and eagle's talon. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade, with ample mint luster on both sides. Census: 1 in 61, 0 finer (3/17).
